Yodo (ヨド, Yodo) is a kunoichi of Sunagakure and a member of Team Shinki.

Appearance

She is a pale-skinned, short, thin-framed girl with long blond hair who wears lipstick and eyelid markings (similar to Kankuro).

In New Era Pre-Timeskip, she wears a maroon skin-tight overalls which exposes a bit of a cleavage. This is underneath a white hooded jacket to cover her from the heat and sand of their country and village. Overall, she has a punk-girl aeathetic^[1].

After 3 years during the Timeskip, she had her hair from long to mid-length and wears a fitted low-waist pants with exposed g-strings on her V-line. She wears dark tube underneath a shorter pink jacket similar to her previous attire, with matching pink boots.

Personality

She is always seen serious and doesn't like to listen to others especially adults, that's why Yodo always plays music using audio gadgets on her headphones even when someone is talking. Her favorite food is macaroon and hates raw fish^[2].

Yodo is upfront about her feelings (a trait she passed on to Sarada later on) and shows dismay about Shinki's capture and does not want Araya inhibiting her, as well as shouting profanity after being ambushed by the Claw Grimes. She was described by Ryu to be bloodlusted and unable to hide her true intent and feelings when confronted with an enemy.

She has unrequited secret romantic feelings for Shinki and wants to support him even though everyone arounds him does not believe in him^[3] (a parallel Yodo has for Sarada to Boruto). Her other teammate Araya also has an unrequited love for Yodo.

Abilities

Yodo is a capable Sand ninja (even praised by Kankuro to be a "talent"^[2]), being one out of the 3 Sand Genin sent by the Kazekage to participate in the Chunin Exams. In the anime, she herself got promoted to Chunin after this event.

Although initially her abilities are unknown in the manga and movie since her battle with Shikadai was just seen in a passing panel, anime explored on this by sharing she had sound-based abilities. First is her super-sensitive hearing which coupled with her speedy reflexes to evade and quickly react with kicks in taijutsu. +3 years in the Timeskip, her super-sensitive hearing became manga canon. Due to this ability, she is able to easily track opponents, subtle changes in the terrains through sound, and even when someone is lying by listening to their heartbeat. To control this ability in times she is not battling, Yodo wears earbuds.

Ryu noted her physical endurance to last longer than normal despite fatal injuries, so much it allowed her to talk out Sarada into realizing her true potential.

Ninjutsu

Her sole jutsu in the anime called Howling Hair Sound Wave utilized her long hair to cause long distance sound attacks and disorient them. Although it functions like a Wind Style ninjutsu due to the sonicboom, Sarada observed it as not one.

Taijutsu

In the anime, she made quick work of Tenten's wooden puppets with strong kicks. She is also quite fast and evasive against multiple kunai thrown at her (parrying one and throwing it back) due to her super-sensitive hearing.

History

Versus Momoshiki arc

Yodo and her team was sent by Kankuro and Gaara to join the Chunin Exams held at Konoha. While the adults are giving instructions, she played a loud music on her headphones and doesn't listen.

She made quick work of Tenten's wooden robots as they enter the First Test by displaying her taijutsu prowess with kicks. They swiftly made it to the First Test with the help of Shinki's Iron Sand and not falling over the ink pit.

During the Second Test, Yodo and Araya let Shinki defeat Team 5 by stealing their flag after he soloed Denki, Iwabe and Metal Lee.

In the Final Chunin Exams, Yodo fought Shikadai. He thought she was a taijutsu expert as she swiftly evades any kunai or his Shadow Possession Jutsu. He found out she has super-sensitive hearing that is why she always has earbuds on. Yodo disoriented him by using Howling Hair Sound Wave, a long distance sound attack which also prevented him to throw the paper bombs he is holding. As it detonates, Shikadai feigns getting injured and shouts but using the explosion sound and smoke, he made his move to tag Yodo with Shadow Possession Jutsu. Just as Shikadai threatens kunai on her neck, Yodo quits the battle and gets defeated.

They watched the battle progress with a battle royal between finalists Shinki, Boruto, and Sarada. With Boruto found out being a fraud by using Kote by his own father Naruto, Otsotsuki aliens arrive midair and destroys the arena. Yodo and the Sand ninjas went home after Gaara helped in the final showdown versus Momoshiki and Kinshiki to help Naruto.

Kara Actuation arc

In the anime, Kara Inner Deepa is looking for Toneri's puppets under orders of Kara in the desert of Land of Wind. Kazekage sent Team Shinki and Team 10 to collaborate in this effort and find out what he is doing in their country, but they were struggling to face this enemy. Shinki struggled in protecting everyone in his defensive wall of Iron Sand as his carbon attacks was stronger. Araya's Salamander was destroyed and Yodo with Team 10 were coming up with ways to fend off. Once the puppet was destroyed by Shinki, Deepa left them be.

Chunin Re-examination arc

In the anime, Kazekage sent Team Shinki to visit Konoha again to watch the Chunin Exam Finals of their Leaf Genin contemporaries.

Matsuri and Ryu arc

3 years after the Chunin Exams, Matsuri and Mamushi came to the Land of Wind for unspecified reasons yet while Jura and Hidari attacks Konoha. Apparently, they wanted to make a Shinju clone out of Fifth Kazekage: Gaara in the Hidden Sand Village but Team Shinki came to battle them and Claw Grimes. Shinki sealed his father in Iron Sand to keep him safe at the expense of Shinki being bitten by Claw Grime and sealed in a tree. This brought a Thorn Soul where Ryu arose. Their leader Jura asked them to search for Boruto since he knew too much about them and gather intel. Matsuri and Ryu teams up and went back to the Land of Wind.

The surviving members Yodo and Araya reported back to Kankuro about this event where they sought the help of Konoha who is facing the same problems. Eight Hokage: Shikamaru sent Team 7 (minus Kawaki/Boruto) to help the two and hopefully save Shinki by snatching the Thorn Soul of Ryu.

They planned on splitting Ryu and Matsuri and they made Konohamaru a solo bait for the latter since she has an "interest" on him.

The former was with Sarada and Mitsuki who says they knew clues about Boruto. They rendezvous with Yodo and Araya who is atop a rock. Yodo stares angrily at Ryu much to his surprise. He then exclaimed he had his Iron Sand scan the area of any chakra from Boruto but ends up scanning Yodo's bloodlust.

The four said to Ryu that using the Thorn Soul could bait Boruto in; where he agreed to do making it float in the air. Just as he did this, Yodo jumped in the air to supposedly snatch it but she fails. She has Yodo suspended in the air with his scattered Iron Sand particles and controls Sarada to stab her. Araya unleashed his sword that absorbs Iron Sand and frees both the kunoichi.

Mitsuki goes into Sage Mode with Sarada going on the offensive against Ryu's Iron Sand which is negated by Araya's Magnetic Iron Sand Sealing Blade (bestowed with Shinki's Magnet Style kekkai genkai) to swat away Iron Sand and giving them the leverage. Yodo assisted with her tracking abilities as the others are having problems seeing him as he disperses in the sand. Thinking they had the leverage, Ryu attacks by summoning Claw Grime back-ups biting Yodo's back. While Araya was distracted of this, Ryu snatched his weapon and captures Sarada, Mitsuki and Araya with his Iron Sand and negotiated with Yodo.

Legacy

Yodo bargained to help the enemy in locating their target Boruto, in an effort to free them. But Ryu was insulted by the offer thus Yodo was impaled in the abdomen to death. On her deathbed, she used her super-sensitive hearing to hear Sarada's heartbeat; describing it as similar to her like a "woman in love".

She also read her hesitation to use a certain power and encouraged Sarada to use that. This sacrifice had been for naught since Koji explained that this event is needed for Sarada to unlock her Mangekyo Sharingan (the best timeline they need in the Ten Directions).

After the mission, Yodo's remains and Ryu's Thorn Soul was retrieved back by Araya to their village. Her efforts allowed Shinki (one supposedly next in line to lead) to go back and break free from being enclosed in the tree, receiving treatment alongside their Kazekage Gaara in their hospital as reported by Kankuro; ensuring both the current and future Kazekage leadership of their village.

Trivia

• In Boruto Movie Zai no Sho, page 51, Naruto mangaka/Boruto writer Masashi Kishimoto wanted to create a punk like girl as inspiration for making the character Yodo (Kishimoto, 2015).
• In Boruto Movie Zai no Sho, page 54, Team Shinki's official sensei sketches appeared disproving they were handled by the Kazekage nor Kankuro. He didn't appear in any of the manga, movie, novel nor anime at all.
• In Boruto Chapter 3 - The Chunin Exam Begins!!, it is implied that Gaara may be Yodo's father. While on the train to Konohagakure, Shinki referred to Gaara as "our father", suggesting that Gaara is the father of all three members of Team Shinki. However, this was retconned in Boruto True Blue Vortex Chapter 19 - Konohamaru-chan, Araya referred to Shinki's adoptive father Gaara as "your father".
• Yodo's anime jutsu is akin to Sound ninja Kin Tsuchi and Sand ninja Temari's (two kunoichi Shikamaru fought in the Chunin Exams) abilities merged into one; a disorienting sound move that seemingly creates a wind attack. This is a throwback to how Shikadai seemingly fought the same enemy as his dad while taking the Chunin Exam. If Shikamaru also didn't give up his match against Temari (and it wasn't interrupted by the Sound-Sand invasion), he is bound to fight Naruto; parallel to Shikadai defeating Yodo then later moving to battling Naruto's son Boruto.
• Team Shinki's love triangle dynamic is similar to early Team 7 (in that Naruto likes Sakura, but Sakura likes Sasuke, but Sasuke does not have any romantic feelings to anyone) like how Araya likes Yodo, but Yodo likes Shinki, but Shinki does not have any romantic feelings to anyone.
• Although Sarada was the first Uchiha to have unlocked Mangekyo Sharingan through love when Boruto was about to leave Konoha, she was unable to willingly open it due to her subconscious hesitation. Through the help of Yodo's death, Sarada was able to control it (consistent with established lore that it is unlocked after killing/death of one's friend).
• Through Koji's Ten Directions, he explained that there are no alternate timelines were Yodo lives and Sarada controls Mangekyo Sharingan. Other timeline indicates Boruto saving them and Yodo living but Sarada doesn't awaken Mangekyo Sharingan. So he spared giving in the intel of Yodo's death to Boruto as a sacrifice towards a better timeline against the Shinju since that new power will be vital "someday"^[4].
